Effects of body build on the metabolic and physiological function in men and athletes - Ⅱ Especially on the physiological function
Abstract
I
n consequence of earlier study about effects of body build on energy metabolic state, this study was aimed to investigate the influence of body build and body composition on pulmonary function of judo-atlrletes and non-athletes. Body build was assessed using metric index, which was calculated by regression equation of Mohr and Greil. The athletic and non-athletic subects were allocated to 3 body build, that is leptomorph, mesomorph, and pyknomorph. The cardioventilary function of 36 non-athletic students and 29 judo athletes were examined by the maximal exercise test. The results of this study were as following; Heart rate of athletes in resting state and at maximum were lower than non-athletes. Significantly higher values of VEmax, O_2max(l/min), VO_2max(l/min/㎏) were found in athletes as compared to non-athletes. Lean body mass(㎏) was significantly higher in athletes, in contrast to higher values of fat mass and body fat proportion of non-athletes. Most athletes are shown to be in contrast to leptomorphic type in non-athletes. The relationship between body build, chest bony size, and anthropometric variables including body composition, and pulmonary function was tested by correlation analysis. A sgnificant higher, positive correlation coefficients of height(r=.578, p=0.0013), fat free mass(r=.521 p<0.005) total body water(r=.520, p=0.005), weight(r=.413, p<0.029) and chest breadth(r=.389, p<0.042) to VO_2max were found. Based on the above results, it was concluded that the maximal aerobic power and cardioventilary function of the athletic subject; were a better than, of non-athletes. The aerobic power of athletes was associated with larger chest size and body fat-free mass.
