Articles : The Effect of Dumbbell Exercise on Body Composition, Physical Fitness, and Cognitive Ability in Elderly Women in Rural District
Abstract
The present study evaluated the possibility of dumbbell exercise as to improve the health status of elderly women in rural area. Although approximatly 300 volunteers of elderly women living in rural area of Gumi city were subjected, 32 of them were attended the whole training program for 6 months. All examine were operated before training. 3 months and 6 months after starting point of training respectively. The items of measurement and their results were as the following, 1. The blood pressure slightly increased after 3 months, and blood sugar level significantly decreased after 3 months and then slightly increased. 2. The self living ability not significant changes but slightly increased, that means positive effect of dumbbell exercise on self living ability in their old age. 3. The cognitive ability, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) Korean version questionnaire were used, slightly increased. 4. All items of the physical fitness except masticate strength were increased, that means positive effect of dumbbell exercise on physical activity level in elderly people. Therefore all items level was better than before dumbbell exercise, including blood sugar level, cognitive ability, physical fitness. That assumed dumbbell exercise help elderly people` both physical and mental ability.
